Scenes from a Theme

Over at Splash Damage there is a Mini Mapping Contest based upon a common theme. The first contest theme is a scene from a city.

I spent a few Sunday nights putting a map together. There are no custom textures - everything used was included with the original game.

Here are a few different ingame screenshots.

A Little Diversion

Over at Splash Damage there is this Forum Post with some Quake Wars smilies.

I was so inspired that I had to make this one - what's a Quake game without a chainsaw?

Map Progress Update

Work on the outside portions of the map has been complete since late April.

Scripting for the spawnpoints, objectives, command post and endgame is done as well.

All of my recent work has been in detailing the indoor portions, making models, textures and adding a bunch of custom sounds.

Visit my mapping page for more info and some progress screenshots.

Minor Map Update

Work is almost complete on the north valley where the Allies initially spawn and where the docs are delivered to end the game.

Visit my mapping page for more info and some progress screenshots.

Happy New Year

Nothing new on the mapping front, we are spending most of time time playing Quake 3 & Quake 4 at the moment. I have Quake 3 and Enemy Territory running on three systems here in the house so everyone gets a chance to play.

As usual we purchased more lego sets for the holidays - 38 sets in two orders.

New Game Rig

With the release of Quake 4 coming in two weeks I need a new gaming PC. I built myself a decent system for $1300 that should be able to handle any of the Doom 3 engine games with ease.

System Specs: Intel 945GNTLR Motherboard, Pentium 650 3.4 ghz CPU, 1 GB PC533 DDR2 Ram, eVga 256mb 7800 PCIe Graphics Card, 250mb SATA Hard Disk, Dual Layer DVD/CD-R Burner, Creative Audigy 2ZS Platinum Pro Sound System and Windows XP Pro SP2 - all wrapped inside of a black Antec server mid-tower case.

I cannot believe how fast the system is while gaming, the SATA drives load the maps in seconds - something that i'm not used to seeing.

This is my first system using Windows XP and now I know why I waited so long - Microsoft cannot write a crash-free piece of software if their lives depended on it. Windows Explorer tends to crash a lot on file/folder copies & moves - this tends to be annoying after the first couple of hundred times - I am in the market for a better file manager.

One New Screenshot

Here is a quick overview of some of the warehouses and an early layout of the train tracks.

New Map Screenshots

I slightly decreased the size of the Axis valley in order to better control the visibility and FPS - image 1 shows the new proportions.

Images 2-6 have a new, rockier texture in the steep portions of the terrain.

Image 2 is using the Fueldump sky texture, while images 3-6 are tests of different skybox textures.

New Map Screenshots

I started the ET version of the map a few weeks ago while on vacation - pulled a few all-nighters and got most of the terrain worked out.

The outdoor portion of the map is almost done, mostly some detail work on the barn and more vis blocking - then it's off to the interior sections and the objectives.

Happy New Year

Nothing new on the mapping front, a few changes and tweaks without any actual progress. It's time to build a new computer so I can continue mapping, but real life keeps getting in the way.

I have been doing some major house cleaning as far as mapping resources come. I have over 4GB of textures, sounds, prefabs, models and other game assets. I have been consolidating all of my files onto my main system in an effort to retire some older, slower computers. This all comes at a performance price.

I have been bitten by the ET bug again and have been playing on the Terminal Insanity server whenever I feel the need to shoot someone. They have 35 maps in rotation and the new ones get filtered in on a weekly basis. You can literally play for four hours and never repeat a map.

I have been getting a lot of gentle prodding to port the map back to ET so it can be played online, so look for a complete remake (again). I would like to wrap this thing up so I can move on to something else - maybe Doom 3 or Half Life 2.

We also made our annual Lego order for the year (around $700) and then made another small purchase just before Christmas.

Map Progress - Axis Spawn

Here are a few different shots of the Axis spawn area.

There are currently ten spawn points for each side.

I am getting a steady 75 FPS in the entire map - even when throwing air strikes every three seconds.

Map Converted to RTCW

After much fustration with trying to use things in ET that were broken or incomplete and finding suitable textures and public domain models, I have decided to port this map back to RTCW where it originally was planned.

Here are a few screenshots of the new outdoor portion of the map.

August 15, 2004

Doom 3

After spending the past week playing Doom 3 I am ready to resume mapping and playing RTCW again.

Someday soon I will finish the Single player game, but for now I am content with how it looks and plays - even it it does tax my system at times.

I can't wait for the editing tools to come out - the in-game one kills my system.

Doom 3 Is Here

Today is the official release date for Doom 3, some stores released it three days ago to people who preordered.

My copy is due to arrive Thursday - complete with the pewter Pinky Demon.

Map Progress - New Objective Model

After not working on my map since April, today I found a few hours to debug the objective script, complete with a new model and screen graphics.

The icon graphic change is programmable from within the map script and the new document objective model is available for other ET & RTCW maps as well.

The screenshots show the new model and in-game objective icon.

Map Progress - New Allied Spawn

I am about 90% done with the outside area of the map and I have posted three new screenshots of it.

Skybox Test Map

Here is a small map that I made that demonstrates the usage of a custom skybox in Enemy Territory. I have been using skyboxes since the Quake 2 days and recently discovered that many new mappers cannot get them to work. It's time to try and give something back to the community and hopefully this helps someone.

The map source file is included in the zip.

The actual skybox was created by Sock - his website is Here

You can download the map zip file Here
